ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I discuss the methods public historians can use when achieving a balance between educating the public (in both historical contents and historiographical approaches) and getting the public’s attention when editing a public history website. The main focus of the chapter is on content writing, a digital marketing skill most needed in the practice of doing public history whether one is launching a private blog, website, publishing articles in different news websites, writing scripts for audio or video podcast or just sharing news about his or her research on social media. I also discuss special circumstances in Croatian historiography and society that has raised questions about educating a public accustomed to positivistic and politicized history. All of the methods and questions are a result of two years of editing a Croatian Public history website, Povcast, that shares article reviews of new books and scholarly papers, works of young experts from the humanities, as well as promoting good-quality YouTube channels and events, and publishing creative materials for teaching history in elementary schools and high schools.
