ABSTRACT

This chapter aims at analyzing the role of the public in the Warsaw Rising Museum. The role of an inclusive and participatory institution which was adopted by the museum is presented. Analysis contains the role of the public in the creation process, exhibition as a means of communication and participatory practices implemented in the functioning of the institution. The phenomenon of the Warsaw Rising Museum as the factor that changed the concept of museums in Poland, as well as public expectations toward it and the beginning of a “boom” era in Polish museology are also analyzed. It is argued that the shift from visitor-observer to visitor-participant was key to those changes.
