ABSTRACT

The chapter contributes to the international debate of the increasing role of social media to model catastrophic events. In addition, the chapter responds to the need for harmonizing the degree of community resilience to natural disasters. In particular, the chapter proposes a conceptual model in which structured and unstructured information, which is retrieved in social networks, can be processed such to identify the ‘who’, ‘what’, and ‘where’ to enrich Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). The proposed model suggests that a combination of social sensing and machine learning approaches provides useful insights into the construction of knowledge and favours community resilience to disaster risk management.
