ABSTRACT

Gandhiji's ideas on education can be viewed in two ways. Gandhiji's ideas on education thus evolved and took concrete form in Nai Talim. The initial enthusiasm in introducing Nai Talim was short-lived. Thus, the essence of Nai Talim that was formalized in 1937 at the Wardha Conference was being experimented at the Gujarat Vidyapith since its foundation. It should be noted that after Gandhiji's departure from the scene, the Gujarat Vidyapith was virtually deserted by the thinkers and practitioners. Emphasizing the relevance and need for introducing Gandhiji's view on education, the Group noted that the Gandhian proposal of Nai Talim (Basic Education) challenged the dichotomy by placing productive manual work at the centre of the school curriculum itself. The essence of Gandhiji's views on education and its relevance for present times may be summarized by quoting the man himself.
