ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the use of digital media and technology to promote Global English variation and cross-cultural awareness in the writing classroom. By working with online sources in various texts/contexts, student writers acquire language competency through guided exercises that examine features of different linguistic levels as well as rhetorical intent and strategies. The teaching strategies presented in this chapter cover the need for understanding (1) linguistic variations and (2) cultural variations through digital media. At the chapter’s conclusion appears a lesson plan that focuses on developing variety exposure to help students analyze intercultural variations. This lesson may be applied not only to college-level writing but also to secondary language arts courses interested in advancing Global Englishes through the teaching of writing.
