ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted psycho-socially people belonging to all age groups. The unexpected mental health along with economic consequences leads surge in suicide occurrences. However, this book chapter tried to present an overall figure of suicide related to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are a few studies forecasting the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on suicide rates based on the impact of unemployment for their modelling approaches. However, suicide rate is predicted up to 145% increment. Epidemiological studies reporting suicidal behaviour prevalence is not comparable as of using different time-frame to consider suicidal behaviours although, some of the risk factors can be retrieved from these studies (also well, from the press media reporting case-series studies). This includes, suffering from economic recession and losing job, psychiatric issues, being infected, fear of COVID-19 contamination, missing family, pressure to be quarantined, COVID-19 work-related stress, lack of alcohol access etc. However, for a better understanding of suicidality, further studies applying relevant suicide theories in the COVID-19 context is highly recommended.
