ABSTRACT
In this chapter, Sam looks at both sides of a debate about the rationality of our emotional engagement with fiction. Does it make sense to cry real tears for the tragic fate of Anna Karenina, if we don’t even believe that she exists? What demands might reason make over our emotions, and how do they relate to our engagement with fiction?
