ABSTRACT

The entrepreneur is the beating heart of economic development. Therefore, promotion of entrepreneurial culture and entrepreneurship is encouraged through active policies. In the academic world, work on entrepreneurship has multiplied. This chapter analyses how the historical study into the behaviour of companies and entrepreneurs has given rise to an academic discipline, the History of the Company. It will also examine how case studies (business histories and bibliographies of entrepreneurs) are the ideal instruments for developing entrepreneurship in today’s society. In addition, it explains the development of the Theory of the Entrepreneur from its origin at the end of the eighteenth century to the present day. There are two objectives in demonstrating the example of entrepreneurship, which should be publicised: firstly to promote entrepreneurial culture and secondly to promote knowledge generation. Both are essential to achieve sustainable economic growth in the long term.
