ABSTRACT

The Sociedad Azucarera Antequerana was an important company, notable for its contribution to Andalusian and Spanish sugar production in the late nineteenth century. This study explores the unique features of Antequera, the municipality where the company was founded as a way of diversifying the economy in response to the fin-de-siècle crisis. Furthermore, it analyses the group of men who formed the company as well as other managers who played an important role in getting the sugar factory operational in the 1890s, with a focus on their particular contributions. It also studies how the infrastructure needed to produce beet sugar was built up. Lastly, the study also addresses the evolution of the company, with special emphasis on important elements of its success, such as sugar production, revenue, and profits.
