ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the multiple definitions of oral history along with an overview of the chapters that make up the book. The book is designed for novice researchers, early career researchers, and experienced researchers. It is designed to be used in higher education. Oral history is an expanding field of research that encompasses various social science fields, such as history, narrative, sociology, and education. Alongside multiple definitions that examine oral history as an art and science, the chapter provides an insight into the differences and overlaps between oral history and qualitative research. Examples of cases illustrate a range of oral history research projects.
