ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the use of violence and the abuse of human rights in the name of conservation in Ngorongoro district, Tanzania. The authorities in various categories and levels use conservation rhetoric and sweeping biodiversity statements to legitimize the use of force, grab community lands, and impose external governance mechanisms. These approaches have proved to be wrong as well as ineffective, and they belittle community and Indigenous practices and their institutions. This chapter details the sequence of events undertaken in the name of conservation only to violate the rights of Indigenous Maasai in Ngorongoro district.
