ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to make the reader more aware of some aspects of quality of life which may be important in improving the standard of living and experiences of persons with disabilities. Quality of life relates to different communities and different settings, and an attempt has been made to introduce aspects of quality of life from developing countries as well as more advantageous settings. That quality of life can be improved in a cost effective manner at a community level is demonstrated in Kohli's chapter. Quality of life as an holistic concept precipitates a number of issues which, although coming to the fore in legal arguments and in professional practice, are most clearly exemplified in the study of day-to-day living. Where handicap is very great, or when the individual is very young, and perhaps when he or she is very old, other individuals need to become responsible for ensuring that quality life experience is present.
