ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to an emerging culture where programme leaders are recognised and rewarded for their crucial role in higher education (HE), where programme leadership is embraced as central to a successful, contemporary, academic career and where institutions invest in developing programme leaders (PLs) and programme leadership. The role of the PL in our HEIs is complex and crucial. As HEIs seek to create distinctive programmes that draw on institutional identity and disciplinary strengths to enhance reputation in a competitive global market, the programme is one of the main units subjected to close scrutiny. PLs have to manage the consequences of changes in funding and fluctuations in the student population whilst maintaining the integrity of the programme. The chapter discusses the role, and supporting individual programme leaders in educational and academic leadership.
