ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the prognosis that the need for successful programme leaders will grow under global and competitive markets for educational services instigating institutions to support, develop and invest further in programme leadership. It also discusses the 'Programme Leaders as Educational and Academic Leaders: A question of influence relationships, behaviour and commitment' by Doug Parkin is dedicated to PLs and programme leadership an important topic and undervalued issue in the academic leadership discourse. Considering responsibilities and challenges that PLs meet on a regular basis, the author emphasises the need to recognise, reward and support them in everyday accomplishments as well as stressing the necessity to consistently develop their leadership competencies and capacities. In the second part of the chapter, the author illustrates how four different styles of leadership 'the mentor', 'the champion', 'the enabler', 'the organiser' can combine in programme leadership.
