ABSTRACT

The approach presented by Forsyth and Powell's UK work offers a solution attractive to South African Higher Education Providers as it will help the new programme director understand their responsibilities and ability to meet them effectively and almost immediately. The collation of the list of tasks performed by programme leaders (PLs) with the aim of creating a database is most effective aspect of the practice. The open access database allowed the PLs to choose tasks that are relevant to their programme which will alleviate stress and anxiety for the PLs so that they can focus more on strategic duties. The fact that the database is regularly updated and evaluated based on the feedback from the PLs and other stakeholders in the institution, assists the PLs to understand their role based on their particular context.
