ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on specifically on the role that education plays in the creative economy, and explores the importance of Higher Education (HE). It also focuses on an extensive desktop data collection of courses across HE Institutions in Nigeria and includes qualitative findings and reflection from a focus group conducted in April 2019 at the University of Lagos with 15 representatives from a range of academic departments and courses. The chapter reviews the education provision and policy framework in Nigeria with a focus on creative industries. It discusses on Lagos and specifically the teaching and collaborative dynamics adopted by the University of Lagos to map opportunities and challenges for collaboration in the creative economy. The National Cultural Policy was first developed in 1988 and the only subsequent review was unsuccessful, resulting in a 2008 draft cultural policy which is very similar to the original 1988 document.
