ABSTRACT

Researchers estimate that nearly six million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common form of dementia. A dementia friendly community is informed, safe, and respectful of individuals with dementia and their families and provides supportive options that foster quality of life. In the US, dementia friendly community efforts are spearheaded at the national level by the Dementia Friendly America initiative. Many communities are integrating age-friendly and dementia friendly community initiatives. Dementia friendly communities work to ensure that people living with dementia and their caregivers have the best quality of life possible and can engage and thrive in day-to-day living. The spirit of collective action-leaders and community members from various backgrounds and perspectives coming together to offer their unique contributions-is often the most critical aspect of a successful dementia friendly community effort. Dementia friendly communities in rural areas play a critical role in supporting people with dementia and their caregivers.
