ABSTRACT

Sociological theory on the differences between rural and urban areas leads people to propose that social interaction among families differ in rural and urban communities. There are several factors that play a role in shaping the demographics of rural communities with one of the most substantial being that a higher proportion of older adults reside there. Recent studies confirm that families and close friends serving as caregivers have taken on increasingly more complex responsibilities such as medication management and operating medical equipment. It is important to note that not all older adults living in rural communities have strong family networks and those individuals may be forced to face many challenges largely on their own. These challenges include lack of transportation, the risk of becoming socially isolated, financial worries, and mobility issues. The integrity of an older adult’s social network can have a significant impact on his or her health and well-being.
