ABSTRACT

Senior centers are of particular importance to rural elders because a lack of resources and lower population sizes and densities limit the development and support of a wider range of rural program options. Few studies have been conducted on rural senior center availability, but at least one indicates that a sizable number of senior centers can be found in rural areas across America. The boom in energy production across rural America has brought resources to some rural communities that have been used to support local social services such as senior centers. Depending on their resources, programs found at senior centers typically include meals and nutrition education; health wellness/fitness programs, screening, and promotion; recreation and social activities; education and arts; social services; and information on and referral to other services. Senior centers and users tend to reflect the demographics, culture, and resources of the community in which they are located.
