ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how chaplaincy must relate to policies that are external to church structures. The complex issues that arise lead to a need to translate terms such as 'holistic support' into chaplaincy practice. Additionally, the authors lay out how they use a grounded theory approach for data analysis, and how this yields original findings regarding the complex interplay of chaplaincy with other factors within the provision of training for young, elite players' holistic development. It is an example of how empirical research can provide an evidence base to support the development of chaplaincy in a particular sector. This is a research report that could easily be presented to a football club considering including chaplaincy in its holistic support team.
