ABSTRACT

The book at hand addresses universities and academic labour in the light of digitalisation and precarisation. It aims to shed light on the questions of how to best analyse and theorise academic labour and what experiences academic workers have made at universities that are shaped by economic, political and cultural contexts. While the analysis can be applied – with limitations – to other parts of the world, the book focuses on British and German universities and academic labour. This chapter introduces the topic, justifies the selection of the examples presented, and explains the structure of the book in more detail.
