ABSTRACT

Examining current EI research from Eastern European countries provides perspective on the evolution of the EI field in the region, identifies commonalities and differences for comparisons between countries, and begins to address the importance of language and culture in the construction and application of EI. In this overview of the book, the seven Eastern European countries are compared with countries in other regions (Western European and the US) through Hosfstede’s intercultural model as well as with each other on sociodemographic and health variables. The concept of intelligence is reviewed and the importance of EI in addressing twenty-first-century psychosocial challenges is noted. The three major EI models (abilities, traits, and competencies) are summarized as a basis for their references to subsequent chapters. Finally each chapter is briefly introduced.
