ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates some of the developments of emotional intelligence (EI) in Poland by reviewing selected research, EI assessment tools and an original study. The topics of the selected studies include gender issues, mate selection, personality, mental health, alcoholism, and work stress. Various self-report and performance EI measures are briefly described and consist of adaptation of English EI measures as well as Polish designed tools. The authors present the results of a preliminary random control study of an EI training program for preschool and nursery school teachers. Results found that the three-month intervention led to significant increases in the Facilitation, Knowledge, and Regulation abilities components of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test. The implications have promise for short-term training and for the development of EI in the Polish educational system. In the last section the future direction of EI development in Poland is considered.
