The present study examines the assumption that Trait Emotional Intelligence (EI), as a constellation of emotional self-perceptions, is related to factors in Bulgarian family structure such as parent–child relationship quality, birth-order and family size. The sample of 546 Bulgarians (260 men and 286 women) completed the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue-version 1.50) and a demographic/family factor questionnaire. The results showed that global trait EI and self-control were highest in those participants who were first born. TEIQue factors distinguished groups based on number of children in the family as well as family status (i.e., divorced, young children, adult children, etc.). EI factors were also significant in predicting ratings of relationship quality with children and with spouses.
