ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the relationship between Game Sense coaching and culture through Nick Hill’s experiences of coaching rugby in Chile and how he adapted to his new environment. His players came with expectations and attitudes to rugby training developed through experiences within cultural contexts different to what he had been used to in the UK that he had to adjust his coaching to. However, regardless of age, experience or culture Nick found that his Game Sense-type approach produced players who enjoyed the game and developed skill and Game Sense quickly over the season. The key to his success was to avoid being dogmatic, adapting to players’ initial resistance to or misunderstanding of the Game Sense approach and ensuring enjoyment and flow in sessions while making sure it was integrated into the way they learn.
