ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the development of Game Sense from its origins in the development of Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) by Thorpe, Bunker and later, Almond. It considers the social and cultural influences on the initial development of TGfU in the UK and then the influence of a North American approach to teaching and coaching through games that significantly shaped its development and ‘put it on the map’. This chapter traces how, over four decades, TGfU has changed significantly and moved away from its original conception by Thorpe, Bunker and Almond. This shifting away from its original intent makes the looser approach of Game Sense closer to the original version of TGfU than its current interpretation. This is discussed within the context of an increasing variety of game-based approaches (GBA) with consideration of the development and future of Game Sense.
