ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we present findings from studies using data obtained from stimulated recall interviews (SRIs) collected in the Relational Mind research project on interaction in couple therapy. In the first study, an inductive qualitative content analysis was performed on SRIs from 24 interviews. From the content analysis, seven categories emerged. Two of these were recollections of instances having occurred in the session while five included different kinds of remarks given by participants. In the second study, one episode from a session was explored. The episode included a discussion of the husband’s position in his extended family, the different meanings given to it and the impact of this on the marital relationship. With access to the SRIs, insight into the impact of the episode on each participant’s subjective experience and into what meaning potentials informed them in the conversation could be attained. These studies show the potential of the SRI as an innovative research method on meaning-making processes in therapeutic encounters and also as a novel means to enhance the impact of therapeutic practices.
