ABSTRACT

Sociodrama, sociometry and psychodrama developed by J. L. Moreno have been widely used in educational, organizational and therapeutic settings. In the following chapter, we will use the term sociopsychodrama (SPD) to underline interconnectedness of the social and personal aspects represented in a role. We will present ideas on how SPD theory and techniques can be used as a qualitative research method, drawing from Moreno’s role theory. We will illustrate how basic techniques and concepts used in SPD, like the encounter (role reversal, mirroring and double), or SPD’s basic structure (warm-up, action, sharing) can be applied within a research setting by presenting examples from a pilot study. We discuss how SPD can be used as a data-collection method to enhance the richness of data and how SPD’s basic techniques can enhance rigor in the research process.
