ABSTRACT

From the time of Bhagyachandra Maharaj the Jagoi Rasa Lila was started in AD 1779 at the auspicious/sacred shrine Langthabal of Shri Shri Govindaji Temple mandap. History tells us the first ever performance of Jagoi Rasa Lila was only Bhangi Pareng Achouba which came to be known as Jagoi Rasa of Manipur. In olden days, the traditional ritual performances took place only at temple mandaps. Starting the performance of Jagoi Rasa Lila at Shri Shri Govindaji Temple pavilion, it was then continued to perform at Shri Shri Bijoygovindaji Temple shrine. The traditional practice of Jagoi Rasa has its codified rules to be observed from the beginning to the end. It begins with a nata sankirtana sequence but prior to this all the palas enter the performance arena before changing their costumes in a humble process of khurumba, just before entering the mandap, at the centre, and to the audiences.
