ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the experiences of an African educator who accepts an ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching experience in China and leaves her country full of anticipation and anxiety. Her arrival in Beijing is a blur of activities, and she soon finds herself on a train to Baotou, Inner Mongolia where she ends up teaching for the next couple of years and engaging in complete immersion into Chinese culture. This chapter highlights her varied experiences in China, her friendships, and her growing expertise as an international educator in the ESL industry.
