ABSTRACT

At the time of her death in March 2017, Pamela Sue Anderson was working on research funded by the Templeton Foundation under the overall title Enhancing Life. One way to sum up Anderson’s work over the years, using her own words, is to say she was involved in a project of “gendering” the philosophy of religion. It will be easily agreed that she saw herself very much as a philosopher in the analytic tradition, albeit one who sought to bridge the gap in the light of perceived differences between this and the Continental approach. However, Anderson’s focus on the issue of vulnerability within the Enhancing Life Project did not come out of nowhere. She had already given the matter her attention in some earlier contexts. Once again drawing on her reading of Ricoeur, she had discussed this in an article about understanding autonomy as a gendered concept.
