ABSTRACT

Love is ultimately willing to be foolish in its risk calculations. Love does not only reject the risks that risk-averse calculation, aimed towards security, would advise. Living in the web of life entangles beings with multiple processes of mutual dependency which defy any simplistic idea of autonomy, self-sufficiency, and power. Love calls these calculations into question and asks for courageous unilateral action. The double structure of action and observation of the action in terms of its fit into processes of securing expectations is dimmed down or even abandoned. A true spirit of love sensitizes one to others and cultivates the enlightenment of a widened perception. Love graciously discloses the very limitations of life and the markers of its finitude by addressing them. Love transforms perception, both in terms of its depth and its horizon. The expansion of perception, however, comes at a price.
