ABSTRACT

The sustainable development goals (SDGs) succeed the millennium development goals (MDGs) as a United Nations programme essentially designed to improve the standard of living with a set of 17 goals. Given the lacklustre performance of its predecessor, the targets are far from being realised in Nigeria even though the end date is still many years away. In the Nigerian context, this cannot be attributed to its legal framework which is robust and adequate from the perspective of international and municipal law. Even though there are prospects for the realisation of the SDGs in Nigeria, these will be largely influenced by a resolution of the barriers, challenges, and the strategies of implementation, thus making this current study imperative. Issues, such as climate change, finance, integration of stakeholders, synergy with all levels of Government, periodic review of the programme, capacity, public enlightenment, and private sector involvement are all integral to the success of the SDGs.
