ABSTRACT

It is wrong to contribute to others’ cognitive biases about important social issues. It turns out that posting news-related items about important social issues on social media predictably contributes to others’ cognitive biases about those issues. So, we all have a standing reason—one which can be outweighed by other reasons, and one to which there are some exceptions—to refrain from posting news-related items on social media. The exceptions are important, and the nature of this “wrong” is certainly discussable. But, I argue, we have here at least a first step towards an ethics of posting on social media.
