ABSTRACT

What is it about social media that makes it an ideal space for mis-and-disinformation to thrive? This chapter explores how the design of social media platforms—and their algorithmic recommendation systems—can enhance the scale, scope, and reach of information manipulation campaigns. Although information manipulation is not new, we discuss how the features of platform design can contribute to the spread of mis-and-disinformation. We discuss these platform affordances in the context of manipulating individual beliefs, emotions, and attention and explore what governments, platforms and individuals should do to build resilience against these campaigns.
