The virtue of the spirit began likewise to show itself among them restraining their bestial lust from finding its satisfaction in the sight of Heaven, of which they had a mortal terror. Feminist debate - which, on this topic, is closely related to Marx and Engels’s views on the origin of the family and of property - has in a way made the problem more complex; women, some feminists argue, are almost universally confined to private spheres, both in social and in economic terms, while men have access to more rewarding public spheres. Careful descriptions of spatial arrangements in different societies -whether in everyday life or in the performance of ritual - are frequently found in good ethnographies. ‘Privacy’ derives from the Latin verb privare. It soon becomes clear, as people look at a number of dictionaries, how privare is given some strangely different and contradictory translations.
