ABSTRACT

Many of the missionaries were single women sent out under the auspices of the Women’s Mission Association (WMA). The WMA also had a home section, which arranged for the selection and training of women missionary candidates, among its other activities. There were other women who worked in the mission field who, although they co-operated with the WMA, were not sent to South Africa by the WMA. Most of the mission work described in this essay occurred in the Eastern Cape and Ciskei, which formed part of the Diocese of Graham stown. The majority of African girls who had any contact with mission schools attended the day or night schools in their immediate vicinity. It is important to keep in mind how very few Africans attended school for any length of time. Missionaries hoped that in their schools they would cultivate the leaders of a future Christian African society.
