ABSTRACT

This chapter presents two different cultural applications that were implemented using specifically adapted multimodal mixed reality systems. The first application is the visualization of scanned statues presented as part of the Museum of Pure form. The second application is related to the assembly of a Greek column from scanned pieces. The system was used to create an exhibition for the public the aim of which was to teach the process of constructing columns as part of the structure of an ancient Greek temple, but it was also intended for archaeologists to use as a tool for research. The Museum of Pure Form is a complete system that includes graphics software, a display system, a haptic device and interface, sound, and a virtual museum that contains representations of pieces of art. Cultural heritage applications have made use of up-to-date advances in haptic interfaces.
