ABSTRACT

In order to build upon previous experience, reach out to local communities and generate knowledge for the development of future programming for older adults, a pilot project was recently completed by the Department of Coins and Medals within the British Museum. The project used the department's handling collection as a focus for discussion, learning, reminiscence and socializing. The motivation for both the museum and the Department of Coins and Medals to do this kind of work is to reach out to local audiences, encourage visits and engagement with collections and remove barriers to interaction with the collections. The breadth of the collections enabled the project to extend further than the remembered past and beyond the boundaries of the United Kingdom. The Department of Corns and Medals within the British Museum holds collections that span the last 3,000 years of human history and come from across the globe.
