ABSTRACT

The opportunity to handle, explore and experience objects is part of good practice in reminiscence work. The subject matter of reminiscence is some past event directly experienced and reacted to by the individual, and brought to mind in the present by some trigger event. Phillips discusses the use of coins to stimulate reminiscence and discussion. A reminiscence worker's collection of objects should include a wide selection of different types of images, sounds, textures, flavours, aromas and actions to go with the objects. Reminiscence work is part of person-centred care, valuing people as individuals with unique life histories and life experiences and trying to see the past and the present from their perspective. Beyond enabling shared reminiscences, objects can assist with some of the basic requirements of any kind of group meeting. Reminiscence themes are big overlapping areas of human activity related to people, places, interests and times in one's life.
