ABSTRACT

Photomontage is the assemblage and combination of the expressive elements from individual photographs. The first great work in photomontage was V. V. Mayakovsky’s book with photomontages by A. M. Rodchenko. From that time on, photomontage - as a new art form replacing drawing - has expanded greatly and has permeated the periodical press, propagandist’s literature, and advertising. Because of its great potential this method is becoming very popular and much relied upon. Photomontage is being used extensively in political campaigns, and from anniversary celebrations and parties right down to the decoration of offices and corners of rooms. During its short life photomontage has passed through many phases of development. Its first stage was characterized by the integration of large numbers of photographs into a single composition, which helped bring into relief individual photo-images. The subsequent development of photomontage has made clear the possibilities of using photography itself, as such.
