ABSTRACT

In this chapter then author documents her career as a fashion photographer. She describes her childhood and her introduction to photography in California. She was born and raised in San Francisco. Her parents came from Norway. Her father became the head of the marine engineering department of the Union Iron Works - later the Bethlehem Steel Company. One of the author's most vivid early memories is of the earthquake and fire of 1906, watching the endless stream of refugees fleeing to safety in the nearby hills. Her job during the three days of burning was to sweep the deep ashes from the ledge on the garden fence. The author always wanted to be a painter. A friend of the photographer Anne Brigman invited the author to her studio. Brigman was part of the Stieglitz group and they were working hard to get the photography recognized.
