ABSTRACT

Chuukese women's status, because of its characteristics and complexity, is like a house of mirrors. The matrilineal structure of kinship is the key to approaching Chuukese women's status, and the framework where the rest of the elements are going to find their place and meaning. A woman is responsible for maintaining this unity between the land and the group, and because of it she has a key role. Through the guarantee of the unity of the family group on the one hand, and the guarantee of the unity of the land, on the other hand, the unity between eterekes and lands is assured, thus fulfilling the primary goal. The introduction of primary and superior education has given a serious blow to traditional knowledge, especially because it has been understood as the only access to the new political and economical power.
