ABSTRACT

The multifaceted creativity of Rusinol makes it necessary to keep in mind two disciplines - literary criticism and art history - when approaching any aspect of his work. Critics writing on the period during which the author wrote for the press in Castilian as well as when his first works in Catalan began to appear, coincide in noting a parallel aesthetic evolution in both his literary and pictorial styles. The connection to an international phenomenon is not incompatible with an appreciation of Impresiones de arte in the intellectual context of Jin-de-siécle Spain, and in the emergence of a generation of intellectuals, who along with the earlier generation of Realists, acquire a critical view of the national reality through the experience of travel.
