ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author looks back from her position as a postmodern narrative therapist to attempt to trace the language of the soul over time. This results in what cannot help but be a barebones overview, which is particularly useful for people new to the area of soul language. She begins by presenting explorations by Plato (428–347 BCE), following these ideas through various eras as they have been presented by philosophers and theologians, and finishing with the work of more recent psychotherapists. Within this chapter, the author also includes an examination of Celtic spirituality which shares much in common with Indigenous and Pre-Christian beliefs. It particularly celebrates the spark of the Divine in all things and therefore a respect for nature and the environment, which is consistent with Plato's descriptions of ‘World soul’ (nous).
