ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the history of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as a fisheries management instrument. It further explores how UNCLOS has been extended and implemented through a number of additional treaties, regional fisheries arrangements, and Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations guidelines and codes. Although there are a variety of fisheries management challenges, this chapter focuses on illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing; drift-netting; and bottom trawling. The chapter concludes with observations about the need to enhance marine protected areas and to continue efforts to curtail bottom trawling.
