ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the global crisis of single-use plastic pollution that has clogged waterways, contaminated the oceans, and contributes to greenhouse gas production. The chapter reviews legal efforts to curb land-based pollution with the conclusion that existing international and regional efforts are inadequate to address the scale and complexity of the problem. The chapter reviews national responses to eliminating and reducing single-use plastic and concludes that sufficient political will exists to create a global legal response to curb single-use plastic production. Notably, much of the momentum to address this issue is driven by Global South suggesting that an alliance of Global South leaders might be the necessary catalyst for a global instrument.
