ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses roles for values in science and engineering, with examples, of approaches for encouraging and enabling school science and engineering to effectively negotiate roles of values in these professional fields. It seems clear that many scientists, engineers and other related professionals often must orient their work towards capitalist values. Students may have opportunities to deepen their understanding of knowledge and skills taught through guided inquiry practical activities. Teachers may feel comfortable with such approaches because they are relatively easy to plan and to assess and evaluate. Fields of science and technology have been associated with many positive developments, such as in terms of prolonging lives through advances in medical and agricultural fields. Extents to which societal members prefer to have fields of science and technology perceived as positive contributors to wellbeing of individuals, societies and/or environments appear quite variable.
