ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to support teachers’ reflections about citizenship education and the role of science education in promoting it. To reach science education aims and/or those concerning the promotion of citizenship, teachers may use their knowledge and previous experiences to identify which aspects are worth being discussed in specific contexts with a given group of students. In addition to what has been stated, a series of aspects about science can emerge from a broad discussion of specific points of the case of the COVID-19 vaccines having the potential to support citizenship education. The case of the COVID-19 vaccines also highlights another essential aspect of science: its non-neutrality. In principle, we identify three fronts from which those aims could be addressed in science teaching: scientific content itself, aspects of nature of science, and science teaching methodologies.
