ABSTRACT

Teachers strive to inspire, build positive habits, and ultimately instill character within students that will enable increased lifelong learning and success. As teachers accompany students down the path of learning development, some students inevitably progress slowly or stray from the path. Diagnosis, by both teacher and student, typically ensues. Teachers may become introspective, searching for ways that they can improve their teaching behavior. Teachers also play a crucial role in ensuring students attribute success and failure in an appropriate manner, exhibit productive help-seeking behavior, and ultimately follow the path of learning with the best possible chances for success. The military environment and culture of West Point undoubtedly differs from a typical college. The philosophy behind the research methodology also deserves a brief explanation. A wide body of research has identified several predictive factors associated with college retention, a common measure for student success.
